Fundraising Proposals

I write and/or consult on requests to public and private agencies -- humanities councils, science foundations, etc. -- with individual grants so far ranging from $40,000 to $700,000 each. (An hour of prime time PBS can costs as much as $650,000 or more to produce, including not only research, shooting, and editing, but also clearance of music and footage rights; a theatrical documentary may cost upwards of $1.2 million.) Outreach and education components are additional. Successful proposals include:

  • 45 Words: The Story of the First Amendment.  The Freedom Forum Newseum. Scripting funds.

  • Faith in Education. Firelight Media. Development funds.

  • Hope and Healing: The Untold Story of the Ellis Island Hospital.  BFVP. Production funds.

  • I'll Make Me A World: A Century of African-American Arts.  Blackside, Inc.  Production funds.

  • Leadbelly: The Life and Legend. Steeplechase Productions. Scripting funds.

  • Miss America: A Documentary Film. Clio, Inc. Production funds.

  • Slam Dunk: A Basketball History of the 20th Century. Roundtable, Inc. Scripting funds.

  • This Far By Faith: African-American Spiritual Journeys. Blackside, Inc. Production funds.
